Liquid Bolted

Description
Originally developed in the 1920's, bolted tanks were first used in the Central United States oil exploration industry as storage tanks for crude oil. Still used today in oil fields around the world, the tanks gained American Petroleum Institute (API) standardization in 1953 under the API-12B specification. Further advancements brought recognition by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) in the 1970's under the AWWA D103 standard. These tanks incorporate a lap joint vertical wall seam layout with a flanged horizontal wall seam, and use synthetic rubber and elastomeric gaskets to seal the panel joints. Materials of construction include mild steel and stainless steel, and mild steel protective coatings include factory applied baked on epoxy and hot dip galvanized systems. Normally configured with a steel floor, walls and a steel deck, all components offer the same coating systems throughout the tank. Since the mid 1970's, these tanks have seen strong growth around the world, and are now in use in over 110 countries. Excellent economics and low maintenance requirements are the strengths of this tank.

Typical configurations
Ground reservoirs, water and wastewater treatment, elevated.

Typical storage applications
Municipal water supply and wastewater treatment tanks, industrial process water, industrial wastewater treatment, fire protection water, petroleum and fuels (excepting petrol).

Typical design standards
Manufacturer's Standard, AWWA D103, API-12B

Typical construction skill level

Low.

Typical size ranges
For ground level tanks, the typical range is from 15 m3 to 7,500 m3.

Strengths
Wide range of sizes, capacities and applications, quick delivery and erection, low life time ownership costs, ease of assembly, easily delivered worldwide, structural integrity not compromised by construction labor, easily expanded and relocated, within certain ranges and configurations often the lowest initial cost.
